Dr. Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi Dr. Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi is a former Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy in Egypt. He holds a B.Sc. (1968) and M.Sc. (1972) in Electrical Power Engineering from Cairo University and earned his Ph.D. from Imperial College London in 1978. His career spans over four decades, marked by significant contributions to both academia and industry. Dr. Shaker began his academic journey at Cairo University, where he served as a professor and supervised numerous research projects, building a strong legacy in the field of electrical power systems. In 1982, he founded Shaker Consultancy Group, one of the region's leading firms in electrical and mechanical consulting, contributing to over 1,500 major infrastructure projects across Egypt and the Middle East. In 2014, he was appointed Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, a role in which he served until mid-2024. During his tenure, he played a key role in transforming Egypt’s power sector. He led major reforms that addressed chronic electricity shortages, increased production capacity, modernized transmission and distribution systems, and integrated renewable energy into the national grid. Under his leadership, landmark projects such as the Benban Solar Park were launched, positioning Egypt as a regional leader in clean energy. He also championed the introduction of green hydrogen initiatives, including the successful operation of hydrogen-blended fuel turbines during COP27. Dr. Shaker's accomplishments have been internationally recognized. He received the Premium Award in Science and Technology from the UK’s Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1985. He also served as the honorary president of the Egyptian Fire Protection Association and held key board positions in public authorities such as the New Urban Communities Authority and the Egyptian Railways Authority. With a career that bridges academic excellence, industrial leadership, and public service, Dr. Mohamed Shaker El-Markabi remains a leading figure in energy and infrastructure development in the region. |
